I know this phenomenon that shadows created by diffuse light sources are often sharpest near the object and become softer farther away, but never think about the reason of it. Now I know this is because the area of light emission is relatively large, causing the shadow to fall off or a "penumbra" gradient-like effect. My experiment result image is as follows:
